Compressed air is the most important working medium in the commercial vehicle sector. It is produced by the compressor, directed via the air conditioning unit to the compressed air containers and stored.
During braking, or in the case of a change of load, the compressed air is directed via control valves and/or control modules to the brake actuators or suspension bellows, this at system pressures over 10 bar.
The actual braking effect is achieved mechanically. Disc brakes manufactured by Knorr-Bremse weighing under 50 kg can at present apply a clamping force of 300 kN and produce a retardation of 900 kW.
The advantages of this technology have led to its increasing use in trucks, semi-trailer tractor units, buses and trailers.
In modern braking, safety and suspension systems, electronics has in many areas replaced pneumatics.
With control times of electronic control equipment in the region of milliseconds, servo-commands are sent, for example, to the appropriate valves and modules. Thus, braking and handling can be adapted to new conditions at lightning speed – this results in greatly improved standards with regard to vehicle stability, braking control, ride comfort and, above all, safety.

Knorr-Bremse has over 100 years´ experience in the provision of complex pneumatic control systems. These are increasingly being used beneficially even outside braking and suspension systems, for instance in the powertrain.
